I created this blog for educators, parents, and students- in and out of the arts- to share what I've distilled from a half century of experience with young people.

To begin, an overview of my journey from Juilliard to Harvard to Broadway.

Perhaps my greatest discovery after 50 years is that what's essential for a professional career in the arts, works for virtually every other field as well.

It involves an almost too-obvious concept, but one with profound ramifications.

Simply put, young people who learn how to feel good about themselves and take good care of themselves, embrace the kinds of choices and habits that lead to success.

This applies to the classroom, careers, personal relationships, and pretty much everything else.

I believe that as educators, our effectiveness- indeed our primary mission- lies in understanding and communicating this to our students.

It's what I call The Seidman Principle.

WHAT'S YOUR REAL?

After a career that's spanned a half century, I've found that there is one thing that virtually every product developer, investment banker, internet tycoon, and CEO, along with every casting director and agent I've ever known from New York to Hollywood, is always searching for.

I'm referring to something real.

This blog is to encourage administrators, teachers, students, and aspiring performers to ask themselves: who am I, really? Am I happy? Am I taking good care of myself? Am I honest?  Disciplined? Mature?

That's what I call your real.

It's who and what you really are- the basis for success at home, in school, on the job, and in life.

What's your real?

I'm a Juilliard-trained career musician, recipient of a Masters degree in Education from Harvard, and I've worked in the field of education and the arts with young people from throughout North America and Europe for the past fifty years. This includes discovering young talent for television, film, Broadway, and dance. I'm doing my best to elevate the critical thinking, artistic, cultural and historical awareness, ethical standards, nutritional habits, lifestyle choices, independence, maturity, and self-esteem of today's aspiring young performers.

Seriously.
